The R. V. Has Introduced "hades," the Word Found in the Greek Text, Which Signifies the Unseen World, in the following Scriptures Mat 11:23; 16:18; Luk 10:15; 16:23; Act 2:27,31; Rev 1:18; 6:8; 20:13,14
Greek: "Geenna" (1067)
In the R. V. the Greek Word "gehenna" Is Translated "hell" in the following Scriptures Mat 5:22,29,30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15,33; Mar 9:43,45,47; Luk 12:5; Jam 3:6
Gehenna: (originally Ge bene Hinnom; i.e., "the valley of the sons of Hinnom"), a deep, narrow glen to the south of Jerusalem, where the idolatrous Jews offered their children in sacrifice to Molech (2Ch 28:3; 33:6; Jer 7:31; 19:2-6). This valley afterwards became the common receptacle for all the refuse of the city. Here the dead bodies of animals and of criminals, and all kinds of filth, were cast and consumed by fire kept always burning. It thus in process of time became the image of the place of everlasting destruction. In this sense it is used by our Lord in Mat 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luk 12:5. In these passages, and also in James 3:6, the word is uniformly rendered "hell," the Revised Version placing "Gehenna" in the margin. (See HELL; HINNOM.)
Gehenna: Gehenna is a transliteration from the Aramaic form of the Hebrew ge-hinnom, "valley of Hinnom." This latter form, however, is rare in the Old Testament, the prevailing name being "the valley of the son of Hinnom." Septuagint usually translates; where it transliterates the form is different from Gehenna and varies. In the New Testament the correct form is Gee’nna with the accent on the penult, not Ge’enna. There is no reason to assume that Hinnom is other than a plain patronymic, although it has been proposed to find in it the corruption of the name of an idol (EB, II, 2071). In the New Testament (King James Version margin) Gehenna occurs in Mt 5:22,29,30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15,33; Mr 9:43,15,47; Lu 12:5; Jas 3:6. In all of these it designates the place of eternal punishment of the wicked, generally in connection with the final judgment. It is associated with fire as the source of torment. Both body and soul are cast into it. This is not to be explained on the principle that the New Testament speaks metaphorically of the state after death in terms of the body; it presupposes the resurrection. In the King James Version and the Revised Version (British and American) Gehenna is rendered by "hell" (see ESCHATOLOGY OF THE NEW TESTAMENT). That "the valley of Hinnom" became the technical designation for the place of final punishment was due to two causes. In the first place the valley had been the seat of the idolatrous worship of Molech, to whom children were immolated by fire (2Ch 28:3; 33:6). Secondly, on account of these practices the place was defiled by King Josiah (2Ki 23:10), and became in consequence associated in prophecy with the judgment to be visited upon the people (Jer 7:32). The fact, also, that the city’s offal was collected there may have helped to render the name synonymous with extreme defilement. Topographically the identification of the valley of Hinnom is still uncertain. It has been in turn identified with the depression on the western and southern side of Jerusalem, with the middle valley, and with the valley to the E. Compare EB, II, 2071; DCG, I, 636; RE3, VI. Hell Is Not Death of Your Physical Body, Hell Comes After Death
Luke 12:4-5 4And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
Hell is worse than death:
Hebrews 10:28-29 28He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
Hell Is Not The Grave
The grave is a place of burial for the physical body:
John 11:17 17Then when Jesus came, he found that he had [lain] in the grave (Mnemeion) four days already.
John 11:31 31The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out , followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave (Mnemeion) to weep there.
John 11:38 38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave (Mnemeion). It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
John 12:17 17The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave (Mnemeion), and raised him from the dead, bare record .
The one place where the bible refers to the grave as related to hell, it used the word Hades not Mnemeion as the verses above
1Cr 15:55 55O death, where [is] thy sting? O grave (Hades), where [is] thy victory?
Mnemeion(3419) occurs 42 times in the NT. Only once it is translated as "grave", all other times it is translated as "tomb" or "sepulchre"
Nature of Death
What does death mean?
Preliminary Understandings:
The body is composed of two parts:
- Physical body
- Soul/Spirit
There are several types of "death":
- Physical, bodily death. The separation of the soul (the spiritual part of man) from the body (the material part), the latter ceasing to function and turning to dust.
- Penal/Judicial Death. The separation of man from God; Adam died on the day he disobeyed God, and hence all mankind are born in the same spiritual condition. "Death" is the opposite of life; it never denotes non-existence. As spiritual life is "conscious existence in communion with God," so spiritual "death" is "conscious existence in separation from God."
Words used to describe death in the NT:
- thnesko (2348) - verb
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: "to die" (in the perf. tense, "to be dead"), in the NT is always used of physical "death," except in 1Ti 5:6, where it is metaphorically used of the loss of spiritual life. The noun thanatos, and the verb thanatoo are connected. The root of this group of words probably had the significance of the breathing out of the last breath.
- thanatos (2288) - masculine noun (from thnesko)
Death, Death-Stroke: Can refer to either type of death, based on context.
- thanatoo (2289) - verb
Death, Death-Stroke: "to put to death", in Mat 10:21; Mar 13:12; Luk 21:16, is translated "shall ... cause (them) to be put to death," lit., "shall put (them) to death" (RV marg.). It is used of the Death of Christ in Mat 26:59; 27:1; Mar 14:55; 1Pe 3:18. In Rom 7:4 (Passive Voice) it is translated "ye ... were made dead," RV (for AV, "are become"), with reference to the change from bondage to the Law to union with Christ; in Rom 8:13, "mortify" (marg., "make to die"), of the act of the believer in regard to the deeds of the body; in Rom 8:36, "are killed;" so in 2Cr 6:9.
- epithanatios (1935) - adjective
Death, Death-Stroke: "doomed to death" (epi, "upon," thanatos), is said of the apostles, in 1Cr 4:9.
- anairesis (336) - noun
Death, Death-Stroke: another word for "death," lit. signifies "a taking up or off" (ana, "up," airo, "to take"), as of the taking of a life, or "putting to death;" it is found in Act 8:1, of the murder of Stephen. Some mss. have it in Act 22:20. See anaireo, under KILL. In the Sept., Num 11:15; Jdg 15:17, "the lifting of the jawbone."
- anaireo (337) - verb
Death, Death-Stroke: lit., "to take or lift up or away", hence, "to put to death," is usually translated "to kill or slay;" in two places "put to death," Luk 23:32; Act 26:10. It is used 17 times, with this meaning, in Acts.
- teleutao (5053)
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: "to end" (from telos, "an end"), hence, "to end one's life," is used (a) of the "death" of the body, Mat 2:19; 9:18; 15:4, where "die the death" means "surely die," RV, marg., lit., "let him end by death;" Mar 7:10; Mat 22:25, "deceased;" Luk 7:2; Jhn 11:39, some mss. have verb No. 1 here; Act 2:29; 7:15; Hbr 11:22 (RV, "his end was nigh"); (b) of the gnawings of conscience in self reproach, under the symbol of a worm, Mar 9:48 (vv. 44, 46 AV). See DECEASE.
- teleute (5054) - noun
Death, Death-Stroke: "an end, limit" hence, "the end of life, death," is used of the "death" of Herod, Mat 2:15.
- apago (520) - verb
Death, Death-Stroke: lit., "to lead away" (apo, "away," ago, "to lead"), is used especially in a judicial sense, "to put to death," e.g., Act 12:19.
- apothnesko (599) - verb
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: lit., "to die off or out," is used (a) of the separation of the soul from the body, i.e., the natural "death" of human beings, e.g., Mat 9:24; Rom 7:2; by reason of descent from Adam, 1Cr 15:22; or of violent "death," whether of men or animals; with regard to the latter it is once translated "perished," Mat 8:32; of vegetation, Jud 1:12; of seeds, Jhn 12:24; 1Cr 15:36; it is used of "death" as a punishment in Israel under the Law, in Hbr 10:28; (b) of the separation of man from God; all who are decended from Adam not only "die" physically, owing to sin, see (a) above, but are naturally in the state of separation from God, 2Cr 5:14. From this believers are freed both now and eternally, Jhn 6:50; 11:26, through the "Death" of Christ, Rom 5:8, e.g.; unbelievers, who "die" physically as such, remain in eternal separation from God, Jhn 8:24. Believers have spiritually "died" to the Law as a means of life, Gal 2:19; Col 2:20; to sin, Rom 6:2, and in general to all spiritual association with the world and with that which pertained to their unregenerate state, Col 3:3, because of their identification with the "Death" of Christ, Rom 6:8 (see No. 3, below). As life never means mere existence, so "death," the opposite of life, never means non-existence. See PERISH.
- sunapothnesko (4880)
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: "to die with, to die together," is used of association in physical "death," Mar 14:31; in 2Cr 7:3, the Apostle declares that his love to the saints makes separation impossible, whether in life or in "death." It is used once of association spiritually with Christ in His "death," 2Ti 2:11.
- koimao (2837)
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: in the Middle and Passive Voices, its only use in the NT, signifies "to fall asleep." It is connected etymologically with keimai, "to lie down," the root ki--, signifying "to lie." Hence it is used metaphorically of "death," Mat 27:52, etc. It is translated "be dead" in 1Cr 7:39. See ASLEEP.
- apoginomai (581)
Die, Dead (To Be, Become), Dying: lit., "to be away from" (apo, "from," ginomai, "to be, become;" apo here signifies "separation"), is used in 1Pe 2:24 of the believer's attitude towards sin as the result of Christ's having borne our sins in His body on the Tree; RV, "having died unto sins," the aorist or momentary tense, expressing an event in the past.
- apokteino (615) - verb
Death, Death-Stroke (See Also Die): "to kill," is so translated in the RV, for the AV, "put to death," in Mar 14:1; Luk 18:33; in Jhn 11:53; 12:10; 18:31, RV, "put to death." Note: The phrase eschatos echo, lit., "to have extremely," i.e., "to be in extremity," in extremis, "at the last (gasp), to be at the point of death," is used in Mar 5:23.
- nekros (3498) - noun and adjective
Dead: is used of
- the death of the body, cp. Jam 2:26, its most frequent sense
- the actual spiritual condition of unsaved men, Mat 8:22; Jhn 5:25; Eph 2:1, 5; 5:14; Phl 3:11; Col 2:13; cp. Luk 15:24
- the ideal spiritual condition of believers in regard to sin, Rom 6:11
- a church in declension, inasmuch as in that state it is inactive and barren, Rev 3:1
- sin, which apart from law cannot produce a sense of guilt, Rom 7:8
- the body of the believer in contrast to his spirit, Rom 8:10
- the works of the Law, inasmuch as, however good in themselves, Rom 7:13, they cannot produce life, Hbr 6:1; 9:14
- the faith that does not produce works, Jam 2:17, 26; cp. ver. 20.
Hell Is a Conscious Place of Torment
Hell Is a Conscious Place of Torment
The Rich Man and Lazarus
Consider the Jesus' depiction of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. The rich man was aware of his torment, he pled with Abraham to warn his family so that they might escape the torment he endured:
Luke 16:24 24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
Luke 16:27-28 27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
No Rest
"and they have no rest day nor night"
Revelation 14:11 11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Psalm 95:11 11Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
Hebrews 3:18 18And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
In contrast, those who belong to Christ receive the opposite, they do enter into rest:
Hebrews 4:9 9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
Weeping and Gnashing of Teeth
You have to be conscious to weep and gnash your teeth:
Matthew 8:12 12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 22:13 13Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 24:51 51And shall cut him asunder, and appoint [him] his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:30 30And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Luke 13:28 28There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you [yourselves] thrust out.
The Eternal Nature of Hell
The Eternal Nature of Hell
In Matthew 25:46, the greek word translated "everlasting" in reference to punishment is the same as the word used for "eternal" life:
Matthew 25:4646And these shall go away into everlasting166 punishment: but the righteous into life eternal166.
The same words that describe hell also describe God and duration of heaven:
Revelation 14:11 11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Revelation 20:10 10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Jude 1:13 13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.
These verses speak of the punishment [hell] being everlasting:
Matthew 25:41 41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.
2 Thessalonians 1:9 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.
References to hell which describe it as everlasting, continuous, for ever, etc....
- "everlasting fire" — Matthew 18:8, 25:41
- "everlasting punishment" — Matthew 25:46
- "everlasting chains" — Jude 1:6
- "eternal damnation" — Mark 3:29
- "eternal judgment" — Hebrews 6:2
- "eternal fire" — Jude 1:7
- "unquenchable fire" — Matthew 3:12
- "the fire that never shall be quenched" — Mark 9:43, 44, 45, 46, 48
- "fire unquenchable" — Luke 3:17
- "mist of darkness is reserved for ever" — 2 Peter 2:17
- "the blackness of darkness for ever" — Jude 1:13
The Justice of Eternal Suffering
The Justice of Eternal Suffering
Objection: "eternal punishment is disproportionate with the evil done, that would not be 'justice'"
Measured by biblical standards, few take sin seriously. The problem is, to make the above objection one has to diminish the offense of sin. Any sin, even "little sins", are extrememly serious
James 2:10 10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one [point], he is guilty of all.
Examples of "severe" punishment for "little sins":
- Lot's wife became a pillar of salt (death), just for looking back (Gen 19:26)
- Nadab and Abihu "fell dead before the Lord" (Num 3:4, Lev 10:1-2) for incorrect worship
- Achan coveted and stole a robe, silver, and gold... he and his family were stoned and burned (Josh 7:24-25)
- Uzzah steadied the ark with his hand. "The Lord's anger burned against Uzzah...God struck him down and he died" (2 Sam 6:6-7)
- Ananias and Sapphire lied to the apostles, God struck them dead (Acts 5:1-10)
Is God unjust to to repay disobedience with a previously announced penalty? (eg. Lot's wife) Not according to Jesus who warned "remember Lot's wife!"
Luke 17:32 32Remember Lot's wife.
Adam ate the forbidden fruit and as a result: the whole human race is plunged into sin and condemnation (Rom 5:15-19). Fair? Yes! Moreover, Adam was warned: "ye shall surely die" (Gen 2:17).
Infinite God = Infinite Offense = Infinite Punishment = Justice
"[T]he magnitude of the punishment matches the magnitude of the sin.... Now a sin that is against God is infinate... Therefore an infinate punishment is deserved for a sin commited against him" [Thomas Aquinas]
"Sin is an attack on the infinately holy God. He, therefore, justly sets the penalties for sin in this world and the next. He righteously condimns sinners for Adam's sin and for their own. And he plainly teaches that he punishes the wicked forever. We conclude that He is just in so doing." [Hell on Trial p. 174]
The Wages of Sin is Death
This death is a three-fold death
Spiritual Death
God warned Adam "...in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Gen 2:17). This death was immediate. From Adam on, mankind is spiritually dead unless and until God sees fit to save us:
Ephesians 2:1 1And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.
Romans 5:12 12Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.
1 Corinthians 15:21 21For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
Psalm 51:5 5Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Physical Death
Though renewed in our minds, we do still fight temptations in the flesh. Bodily death and or recieving of our new bodies, puts to death the corrupt flesh
Hell / Everlasting Punishment, Eternal Damnation
This is the just exchange for offending an infinate God. Because of Jesus' work on the cross, only the unsaved experience this "death".
John 8:51 51Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
1 Corinthians 15:54 54So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
Romans 6:23 23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Arguments for Annihilation Refuted
The Vocabulary of Destruction
It would seem strange...if people who are said to suffer destruction are in fact not destroyed. [Dr. Stott]
Passages which could be used to "prove" annihilation:
- Matt 10:28 Rather be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
- Matt 7:13-14 the broad road leads to destruction
- John 3:16 the saved do not perish
- John 10:28
- John 17:12
- Romans 2:12
- Romans 9:22
- Philipians 1:28, 3:19
- 1 Thessalonians 5:3
- Hebrews 10:39
- James 4:12
- 2 Peter 3:7,9
However, "everlasting annihilation" is an unlikely meaning in the verse below. Further, doesn't being shut out "from the presense of the Lord" imply existance?
2 Thessalonians 1:9 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
Destruction in Revelations 17:8,11 cannot mean annihilation because in Rev 19:20 the beast is thrown "alive" into the fiery lake... and they are still there "one thousand years" later Rev 20:7,10 and further Rev 20:10 says they will be tormented day and night for "ever and ever".
The bible uses five main pictures to speak of hell (only the last is compatible with annihilation):
- Darkness and seperation
- Fire
- Weeping and gnashing of teeth
- Punishment
- Death and destruction
7 examples of "weeping and gnashing of teeth" all preceeded with ekei which means "there, in that place" indicating suffering while in hell:
- "darkness" (Matthew 8:12, 22:13, 25:30, Luke 13:28)
- "fire" (Matthew 13:42, 50)
- being cut to pieces (Matthew 24:51)
Matthew 25:46 "then they [the wicked] will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life"
"Because aionios modifies both punishment and life in Matt 25:46, it stands to reason that the same quality and temporal connotation are in view"
Matthew 25:41? Jesus teaches that the wicked will share the same destiny as the Devil, which according to Rev 20, is endless suffering in the lake of fire.
"it would be quite possible to understand "death", "destruction", and the like, as meaning a wretched and ruined existance.
Hell-Fire Imagery
Consider Jesus' parable of the weeds, Matt 13:30: "collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned" but annihilation was clearly not in view. Jesus explains the weeds go to where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matt 13:40-42) Jesus speaks of suffering, not consumption, anguish not extinction.
"He will be tormented with burning sulfur"(Rev 14:10)
"and the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever" ... How could the smoke from the fire ascend forever if it's fuel had been consumed?
"and there is no rest for them day or night for those who worship the beast and him image" interpretation confirmed: "no rest...day or night"
"the second death" is another name for "the lake of fire"
The Future Home of the Wicked: Hell
Psalm 9:17 17The wicked shall be turned into hell, [and] all the nations that forget God.
Proverbs 5:5 5Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
Proverbs 9:13,15-18 13A foolish woman [is] clamorous: [she is] simple, and knoweth nothing. 15To call passengers who go right on their ways: 16Whoso [is] simple, let him turn in hither: and [as for] him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him, 17Stolen waters are sweet, and bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant. 18But he knoweth not that the dead [are] there; [and that] her guests [are] in the depths of hell.
Proverbs 15:24 24The way of life [is] above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.
Proverbs 23:13 13Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die. 14Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
Isaiah 30:33 33For Tophet [is] ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made [it] deep [and] large: the pile thereof [is] fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.
Isaiah 33:14 14The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?
Matthew 3:12 12Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Matthew 5:29-30 29And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell. 30And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 7:13,14 13Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 8:11,12 11And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. 12But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 10:28 28And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 13:30,38-42,49,50 30Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. 38The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked [one]; 39The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 49So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just, 50And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 16:18 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Matthew 18:8,9,34,35 8Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast [them] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. 9And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. 34And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
Matthew 22:13 13Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:28-30,41,46 28Take therefore the talent from him, and give [it] unto him which hath ten talents. 29For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. Mat 25:30And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Mat 25:41Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Mat 25:46And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Mark 9:43-48 43And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 45And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 46Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 47And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: 48Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
Luke 3:17 17Whose fan [is] in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
Luke 16:23-26,28 23And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. 25But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence. 28For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Acts 1:25 25That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.
2 Thessalonians 1:9 9Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
2 Peter 2:4 4For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast [them] down to hell, and delivered [them] into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;
Jude 1:6 6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Jude 1:7-23 7Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8Likewise also these [filthy] dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. 10But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. 11Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core. 12These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds [they are] without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. 14And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard [speeches] which ungodly sinners have spoken against him. 16These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling [words], having men's persons in admiration because of advantage. 17But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18How that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. 20But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, 21Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. 22And of some have compassion, making a difference: 23And others save with fear, pulling [them] out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Revelation 2:11 11He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.
Revelation 9:1 1And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. 2And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Revelation 11:7 7And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
Revelation 14:10-11 10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
Revelation 19:20 20And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Revelation 20:10,15 10And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet [are], and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. 15And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 21:8 8But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Objection: Hell cannot be seperation from God because the presense of the Lord is everywhere Objection: See Genesis 3:22-24. From this passage of scripture it is clear that after man sinned, God did what he could to make sure that sinful man would not live forever by eating of the Tree of Life. Indeed, God even placed the mighty cherubim and a flaming sword to prevent this from happening. It is only through Christ that man can receive eternal life. (“For the wages of sin is DEATH, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” -Romans 6:23)
